The Custom Camper Blinds story

Hi, we’re Vikki & Chris.

We have always had a dream to own our own campervan to have the freedom to travel to explore the UK and beyond in time to come.

After purchasing our van two years ago we loved every aspect of it, and we wouldn’t change any part of it apart from the window coverings.

The curtains initially looked adequate for our needs but after spending nights away in the van we realised there must be a better window covering alternative.

The problem

Curtains for the curtains.

The drawbacks we found from our curtains included:

  • Letting light in on early summer mornings
  • Lack of thermal barrier as we could feel the cold air drifting down from below the curtains onto our faces at night whilst in bed
  • Bulkiness of the curtains and the impracticalities especially around the kitchen area
  • Thermal properties were poor, the van became too hot in summer and did not keep the heat in during the winter
  • For us the curtains gave a slightly dated look against the interior of our van too

Finding a better way

Better materials and better fit.

After researching window coverings for campervans, we found there were very little options available.

We then researched different blind materials and components and set about making our own blinds.

When researching materials for the blinds we found a honeycomb/cellular; foiled lined; thermal fabric. This material outperforms any other blind materials and was light weight and slim in profile.

We then found compatible components that would be suitable with this fabric and then created our first blinds for our own van.

Our first fit

Made for our own van.

The transformation

A more comfortable van in every season.

The transformation was incredible, the blinds made such a difference – keeping the light out on the early mornings as they are completely blackout; no more waking up with cold faces due to the perfect fit and thermal qualities; kept the van more insulated, holding the heat in on cold nights; keeping the heat out more efficiently on hot summer days;

On top of these benefits, the blinds were not as bulky as the curtains, they were slim and did not take up as much room; they really complemented the interior of the van; were much more practical around the kitchen area; as well as extra added sound proofing as our windows are only single glazed, also helped to reduce any condensation build up on the single glazed windows on cold nights.

Custom Camper Blinds is born

Tested in all seasons.

After living with these blinds in our van for over a year and having tested them throughout all seasons, this is when we thought these blinds could benefit so many other campervan owners out there and Custom Camper Blinds was created.

We have now started supplying specialist campervan conversion companies, along with the DIY converters.
